BUSINESS NEWS

  • Axe Marks the Spot and Opelika Rage Room have merged to form one venue for axe throwing and a rage room experience downtown. Owners say reservations are required to join in the fun and plan to add more activities soon.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Opelika High School football head coach Bryan Moore resigned on Dec. 19 at an emergency board meeting; Opelika City Schools will begin its search for a new coach to build on the program’s recent playoff success.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Auburn and Lee County have installed signage at the intersection of Moores Mill Road and Society Hill Road to alert motorists that construction of a new roundabout will start the week of Jan. 5 (temporary delays may occur during paving). The project is expected to finish in spring 2026.  The Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • East Alabama Health celebrated the grand opening of EAMC North today in Opelika to expand access to inpatient and outpatient mental health services. Local officials (including Opelika and Auburn mayors) joined the ribbon cutting and facility tour.  The Observer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • HappyPaw Doodles is seeking two local families to host select breeding dogs through its guardianship program this holiday season. The program offers a discounted fee with future breeding obligations (ensuring the pups receive the care they need).  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Smiths Station basketball had a busy weekend as the boys split contests at Spain Park on Dec. 19-20 and the girls lost games at Auburn High (in a local tournament). Both teams will resume play after New Year.  The Observer
