COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CARE Humane Society in Lee County is seeking holiday fosters so pets may leave kennels on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Locals may care for dogs for two days and cats or puppies for at least five days, with free supplies and vet care provided.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Grandma Val’s Lemonade and More and GVL Beverage Company launched a tasting tour for their new beverages, O.G. Lemonade and TaéBerri, that will travel through Lee County, East Alabama, and select West Georgia communities. The tour stops at Girls STEPS Inc. Christmas Carnival in Opelika on Dec. 21 (3-5 p.m.).  The Observer
  • Grandma Val’s Lemonade and More is now bottling OG Lemonade and TaéBerri Raspberry-Lime for sale at local markets and restaurants. The business plans to add syrups, purées, and sorbets this spring (a nod to Grandma Val’s legacy) to help the family grow its company.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Dec. 16, Opelika City Council approved a full agenda and recognized two 11-year-old Brown Girls Ink writers + they released two books and are planning short films to inspire local youth.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Auburn basketball stayed at No. 21 after beating Chattanooga 92+78 and will face No. 6 Purdue at the Indy Classic today at 5:30 p.m. Coach Steven Pearl said the team plans stronger practice ahead of the contest.  AL.com
  • Trinity Eagles boys basketball team fell 51-47 to the Springwood Wildcats at Springwood as they rallied from a 15-point deficit with Reid House scoring 22 (leading the team) before a strong rebound effort by the Wildcats sealed the win. The team hopes to bounce back in their next game.  The Observer
  • Auburn High School boys and girls basketball teams beat cross-county rival Loachapoka on Dec. 9 — the girls won 59-33 and the boys 64-41, boosting their records to 6-1 and 9-3 as coaches experimented with new lineups ahead of upcoming tournaments.  The Observer
