  • Downtown Opelika will become a winter wonderland from November 26 to January 2 for Opelika’s Very Merry Christmas—featuring a stroll, parade, tours and other festive events planned by city partners to bring residents and visitors together.  The Observer
  • Action 8’s Magical Christmas Toy Drive — in partnership with Hawthorne Atchison Riddle — is collecting new, unwrapped toys for local families from now until December 10 at the Shoppes at EastChase. Tommy Atchison said his law firm joins the drive each year because it spreads joy among staff and the community.  WAKA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • WM celebrated the opening of its new $50M Salem Renewable Natural Gas Facility in Opelika that will generate about 750,000 MMBtu per year, enough to power roughly 15,000 homes and support a fleet of 500 heavy-duty trucks. The facility converts landfill gas into renewable natural gas and will reduce more than 40,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.  The Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Auburn Community Orchestra will perform its traditional holiday concert on Dec.4 at 7 p.m. with local musicians led by new music director Dr. Russell Logan. The event is presented by Auburn United Methodist Church + Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and will feature timeless classical medleys for all ages.  The Observer

  • Auburn High School girls and boys basketball teams both won home games over Lee-Scott Academy in their first crosstown matchups on November 20 at the Auburn High School Gymnasium— the girls won 68-37 with Braylee Winfrey scoring 21 points, and the boys won 69-54 after fending off a late comeback.  The Observer
  • Freshman quarterback Deuce Knight made his first start at Jordan-Hare Stadium last Saturday and ran 75 yards for a touchdown on his first play. He finished with four touchdowns, 162 rushing yards and 239 passing yards as Auburn beat the Mercer Bears 62-17—his debut marking a strong record for the team.  The Observer
  • The Glenwood Gators lost 34-21 to the undefeated Southside-Selma Panthers on Friday night, ending their playoff run at 10-3. Southside-Selma will face Bayside Academy in the Class 3A semifinals on Friday—keeping their unbeaten record at 13-0.  The Observer
  • The Auburn Tigers stayed 7—0 after they beat the UTSA Roadrunners 59—42 on Monday afternoon in Frisco, Texas as part of a two-game Hoopsfest set. The Tigers will face the California Golden Bears on Wednesday as they try to keep their winning streak alive.  The Auburn Plainsman
  • Opelika High School won a close 31-28 semifinal game against Auburn High School to earn a state championship berth. The Bulldogs will face Thompson High School on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at Protective Stadium—coach Bryan Moore said the win is a turning point for Opelika—and they are now preparing for the title game.  The Observer
