COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alabama Rural Ministry is hosting its No More Shacks fundraiser until Nov 2 — featuring local events from Tuesday to Saturday with a Smash the Kats and Destroy a Van event on Nov 1. Founder Lisa Pierce will sleep in a constructed shack in downtown Auburn — raising awareness about home repair needs and inviting volunteer support.  The Observer
  • The 2025 Rural Renaissance Roadshow—an event that brings over 200 leaders together to work on rural ideas in energy, food, water, and housing—will be held in Opelika Nov. 10–12. Andrew Freear from Auburn University’s Rural Studio will open the event with a speech on 'Resilience by Design' as attendees tour projects that show new ways to strengthen their communities.  The Observer
  • Quality Homes is building a four-phase housing development around Hodge Cemetery, which holds graves from 1851 to 1989—Tiffany Hilyer of the Cemetery Preservation Commission has asked the Opelika City Council for a 10-foot buffer to protect the historic site. The mayor and council are working with developers to secure the necessary agreements while preserving the cemetery's heritage.  The Observer
  • The city of Auburn will host a GIS Day celebration Friday, Nov. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Boykin Community Center Auditorium — partnering with Opelika, Auburn University and Lee County Mapping & GIS — where guests can explore an Augmented Reality Sandbox, see drone displays and check out the Auburn University GeoExplorer mobile lab.  The Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Auburn University Gospel Choir, led by Drs. William and Rosephanye Powell (since 2001), shares stories of faith and resilience as it holds auditions each semester and unites diverse students through gospel music. The choir will host its annual Unity Concert on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at True Deliverance Holiness Church and join the University of Alabama's Afro-American Gospel Choir to celebrate and worship together.  The Auburn Plainsman

  • An opinion column questions why Auburn University does not require aerospace engineers to take an ethics course while all other engineering students must do so. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits will not add funds after November 1 as the government shutdown halts payments, affecting over 750,000 Alabamians who rely on the program—recipients may use existing EBT funds while officials urge families to seek local food bank support until a funding deal is reached.  AL.com
  • In October 2023, Auburn Fire became a licensed ALS provider, expanding its care to include 32 state-licensed paramedics and 13 advanced EMTs – firefighters who now use specialized equipment like LUCAS CPR machines to deliver faster, life-saving aid. Since that milestone, the department has performed over 1,000 advanced interventions and cared for more than 9,000 patients.  The Observer

  • The Auburn Heart Club will host a blood drive in room 2107 of the Melton Student Center today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.+ LifeSouth is partnering with the club to help donors who are healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more, and have valid photo ID.  Eagle Eye TV
  • AAA Alabama released Halloween safety tips to help drivers, parents, and party hosts avoid holiday hazards—advising motorists to slow down on main roads while reminding caregivers to stay with children and choose bright, reflective costumes. The organization noted that higher traffic and low light can increase the risk of pedestrian injuries, urging everyone to plan ahead for safe celebrations.  WAKA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Opelika secured the No. 3 playoff seed with a 24 to 14 win after senior defensive back Braiden Howard made a crucial pick-six that tied the game—sparking a comeback before the team travels to face Hewitt-Trussville in the opening round on Nov. 7.  The Observer
  • Auburn defeated Arkansas 33—24 on Saturday as the Tigers’ defense carried the game with standout plays that secured their first conference win of the season. The offense still struggled and coach Hugh Freeze made changes, setting Auburn up to face Kentucky on Nov. 1 at 6:45 p.m. on the SEC Network.  The Observer
