- ➤ Local organizer JoAnn Ceasar said the 11th annual Homemade Sweet Treats: CandyLand of Giving Edition will invite locals to donate homemade desserts and canned goods to help lessen food insecurity, with signups closing Nov. 1. The event will be held on Dec. 13 from 2 to 5 p.m.—at Hodges Vineyards & Winery—with all proceeds benefiting East Alabama Food Insecurity Relief and the Food Bank of East Alabama. The Observer
- ➤ Lee County Flea Market has served as a local hub for 40 years, and new owners Dawn Greaney and David White upgraded the space with ramps for wheelchair access — shoppers now enjoy a safer, cleaner venue. The market is open year-round on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and hosts over 400 vendors selling a wide range of items — keeping the community commerce strong. The Observer

- ➤ Southeastern Grocers announced it will divest its Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi — including 32 Winn-Dixie outlets and 8 Harveys markets — to focus on expanding in Florida and extreme south Georgia. The transition will complete by year-end and early next year, and Winn-Dixie — which turned 100 this year and has long served local communities — will change ownership of its remaining locations. - ➤ National grocery chain Kroger will hire 18,000 workers in roles such as cashiers and deli staff as it prepares for the busy holiday season and beyond. The company said it will offer better wages, benefits, and a tuition reimbursement program while operating stores in Auburn and other Alabama cities (Decatur, Hartselle, Huntsville, Lanett, Madison and Opelika). - ➤ East Alabama School of Esthetics offers a 12-month master esthetician program for local students to train in skincare and beauty services without the need to travel, recruiting new students in September and February and accepting spring term applications by mid-January—students earn a temporary license after 700 hours in the course. - ➤ Southern Union State Community College held a Legislative Appreciation Luncheon on Oct. 21 where school leaders thanked lawmakers for backing new programs like aviation maintenance and veterinary medicine. The college noted a 25% enrollment growth over the past five years — a push that strengthened local workforce opportunities. The Observer
- ➤ Kevin Courtwright— a former Auburn University landscaper— sued the university in federal court after he was fired on Sept. 23 for his Facebook posts reacting to Charlie Kirk’s death, saying his First Amendment rights were violated. AL.com
