COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Beat Bama Food Drive will host its annual Hunger Banquet on Oct. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center (Rooms 306 A and B) to raise awareness of food insecurity and boost food donations in its contest with the University of Alabama; guests will enjoy free meals that highlight income differences across East Alabama.  Eagle Eye TV
  • Auburn churches are experiencing a quiet revival as more millennials and Generation Z members return to services for community and guidance. Campus ministries and personal faith journeys have driven the rising attendance—helping young adults find support amid digital isolation.  The Observer
  • Shree Summerlin was awarded the Main Street Hero Award by Opelika Main Street earlier this fall—she has worked as an active volunteer and Design Committee member to help local businesses and organize community events. The Auburn University graduate continues a family legacy of service and will keep working to support her community.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Opelika True Value, a family-owned hardware store led by local partners, had a soft opening on May 1 and plans a grand opening in March 2026. The store sells tools, lawn supplies and outdoor furniture, and will host events like Hunters Night Out on Nov. 13—offering shoppers expert advice on home projects.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Joshua Race, an Auburn University grad student and band director in Fountain, Colo.—recently named to Yamaha’s 40 Under 40 list honoring young music educators—teaches using metacognitive strategies that help his students learn better. He was surprised by the call he received last Christmas and plans to use the honor to keep growing as an educator.  The Auburn Plainsman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee County hosted the Tunnels to Towers 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit at Southern Union State Community College, where more than 1,600 school children and 6,000 residents visited and county officials from the Emergency Management Agency and Sheriff’s Office were recognized for their support—marking the exhibit’s first appearance in Alabama.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Auburn's football team lost 20-10 to Georgia on Saturday night in the 130th Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. The Tigers built an early lead but a key fumble shifted momentum — coach Hugh Freeze said his team will work to improve before the next game — leaving Auburn to regroup.  The Observer
  • Auburn High School defeated Smiths Station High School 38–0 at Panther Stadium on Oct. 10 as the Tigers regrouped after a loss. Cason Myers—who passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns—and his teammates helped the school secure the win as they prepare to host Carver High on Oct. 17.  The Observer
  • Southern Prep Academy — on its 320-acre campus — will host a Zombie 5K on Oct. 25 at 4:45 p.m. CDT where runners will traverse a 3.1-mile course with volunteer scare actors dressed as zombies. Registration costs $30 with a guaranteed race T-shirt for sign-ups by Oct. 10 and after the race a Harvest Jam featuring local band Cutting Edge, food trucks and family activities will follow.  The Observer
  • On Friday night, the Southern Christian Patriots battled hard but fell 50–24 to defending champion Evangel Lightning in a tough 8-man football game in Alabaster. The team has a bye this Friday and will return home to Moore Stadium on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.—their final regular-season game for senior night.  The Observer
