- ➤ Ru’s Roots, an adaptive gym founded by the Garst family in honor of their late daughter Ruthie, will open a group fitness facility at 1101 Geneva St. in Opelika; the nonprofit — built through community fundraising and offering free, barrier-free workouts — plans a larger building on Waverly Parkway in the coming years. - ➤ The Auburn Housing Authority is hosting its Fall Festival on October 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ridgecrest Community Center where families and neighbors can enjoy a live DJ, line dancing, games, and food + community resources to support safe housing. Organizers said the event, a tradition since 2015, will help everyone feel connected and have a great time. The Observer
- ➤ The East Alabama Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Oct. 26 at Auburn University on Campus Green at 500 Heisman Drive with registration at 2 p.m. and a Promise Garden Ceremony at 3 p.m. before the walk begins, and local Sherwood Thomas’ daughter Joy will walk in honor of her mother Betty to help raise funds and support Alzheimer’s research + reach a $112,000 goal. - ➤ Local author Kay Whaley and illustrator Kathy Hamrick have released the fourth book in the Tales of Sydney series—'Sydney’s Adventures in Aubieland'—which follows a Portuguese Water Dog in Auburn after she steps on the Auburn University seal. - ➤ On Sept. 29, East Alabama Health and Tuskegee University announced a cancer research partnership that joined doctors and scientists to study, diagnose and treat cancers including breast, gynecologic and prostate cancer.
