COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lee County Literacy Coalition is reviving its Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee on Aug. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Twenty-One Acres on 5505 Wire Road in Auburn to raise funds for literacy programs — local teams and businesses can join through team entries and advertising options.  The Observer

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Auburn police said a two-vehicle crash on Saturday, August 16 at about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Shug Jordan Parkway and Richland Road ended with a 77-year-old woman dying about two hours later and left an 82-year-old man injured—while a 24-year-old man got first aid at the scene as the Traffic Homicide Unit investigates the incident.  WAKA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • American Deli opened a new location at 1923 S. College St.—serving Auburn families a wide menu that includes fresh wings, burgers, and sandwiches. General Manager Amy Hu said the restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers pickup and DoorDash delivery.  The Observer
  • Discount Tire opened its first Opelika location at 2109 Frederick Road next to Home Depot — the store will serve Lee County drivers Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brewzle Whiskey Festival will return to downtown Opelika on Sept. 20, hosting tastings, live music and food at North Railroad Avenue in front of Red Clay Brewing Company and John Emerald Distillery—its expanded lineup will include over 25 small craft distilleries, panel talks, a cornhole tournament and whiskey-themed pastries.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Auburn City Council approved an infrastructure deal for The Mark at Auburn, a 329-unit residential project planned for downtown. Landmark Properties will break ground in January 2026 and finish by June 2028—while following strict safety and delivery rules.  The Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A nurse from Opelika, Amanda Brown, started Happy Feet Mobile Foot Care in April to bring essential in-home foot care to homebound patients in Lee and Chambers counties. She uses one-on-one care to reduce pain and improve mobility—meeting a need for those who face a two-hour trip to the nearest provider.  The Observer
