- ➤ Construction crews are preparing the former Virginia College storefront at Bell Plaza Shopping Center on Atlanta Highway and Bell Road for two new stores—O’Reilly Auto Parts and Beauty and Beyond, with work expected to be completed in four to five months. The 30,000 square foot building has been vacant since Virginia College closed in 2018 and is near shops like Dollar General and El Mezcal Mexican restaurant. WAKA

- ➤ Auburn police are seeking public help to locate a missing 42-year-old man—any details should be reported immediately. Opelika-Auburn News
- ➤ Opelika Police arrested Amber Lynn Phillips on Aug. 6 after community tips and security footage linked her dark gray Honda Pilot to a hit and run incident on Aug. 5 on Rocky Brook Road— a 76-year-old man was struck and taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in stable condition. - ➤ On Aug 7, the Opelika Public Library unveiled a pop-up exhibit called '100 games. One Rivalry. A History of Opelika vs. Auburn Football' that displays memorabilia, banners, and yearbook extracts until Sept 12. Opelika will host a panel discussion on Aug 30 at 10 a.m. and the two schools will play their 100th football game on Sept 4 at 7 p.m. — a key event in a longstanding rivalry. The Observer

- ➤ Ashley McCrary, who is undergoing treatment for ocular melanoma, founded the Eye on Grace Foundation in May 2024 to fund travel for treatments and build a community for those with this rare cancer—since then, the foundation has sponsored nearly 300 trips including funding for an 18-year-old patient—and it will host a pickleball tournament in November. - ➤ A multi-million-dollar student housing project called The Everly cleared a key regulatory hurdle when Auburn City Council on August 5 approved an infrastructure agreement — paving its way toward construction. The 4.8-acre project will cost at least $110 million and add 718 beds for college students with specific traffic, parking, and safety rules in place and is expected to finish by May 2028.
