  • NBA player and former Auburn basketball star Walker Kessler held a Back to School Drive at the Auburn Boys and Girls Club where he gave out backpacks, lunch boxes — and water bottles to local students.  Opelika-Auburn News
  • A local nonprofit dog and cat rescue called Woof Ave. received notice on July 30 that they must leave their longtime facility on Opelika Road by Sept. 30—giving them less than 60 days to find a new space. The rescue is promoting pet adoptions with reduced fees and seeking community donations to help relocate animals with special needs.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business owner Bradley Haddon said his shop lost 91% of sales and nearly all of its employees in less than three weeks after Gov. Kay Ivey signed a law banning THC, CBD, and smokable hemp. He will meet with law enforcement this week—other retailers report steep drops in customers and reduced sales tax revenue.  The Observer

  • Auburn’s Lee-Scott Academy has named Meg Larsen as the varsity head girls flag football coach and Moses Ogunleye as the varsity head boys soccer coach. Larsen, a graduate of Auburn University with championship experience from Smiths Station and Opelika High Schools—Ogunleye, originally from Nigeria, brings strong credentials from his time with Opelika Crush Soccer Club and Auburn High School and looks forward to developing his team.  The Observer
  • Lee County Schools has launched a new ParentSquare communication platform to give families one easy way to get school messages & updates, replacing several older systems. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will boost patrols in school zones and remind drivers to slow down as students return to school.  The Observer
