- ➤ After a meeting on teen crime and gun violence, Chief of Police Shane Healey thanked community members and announced that Richard Curry with the Boys & Girls Club of East Alabama has created an anonymous survey for teens to share their views. The survey will remain active throughout the summer and into the new school year to help shape local safety efforts. The Observer
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ College Quest, a free two-week program for visually impaired high schoolers, is underway at Auburn University and runs from June 14 to June 27—sponsored by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the Alabama Industrial Development Training, and the university to teach skills for independent living and college readiness. Students who complete the program will earn two college credit hours and be eligible for a STEM scholarship while gaining real college experience. The Observer
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ East Alabama Medical Center has acquired the new da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system to help doctors perform surgery with tiny cuts that lower pain and speed up recovery. The hospital became the third in the state to use this machine and performed its first procedure on June 16—boasting 150 design innovations for more precise surgery—while promising to advance patient care. - ➤ Auburn University sold out public season tickets for football for the third year in a row, matching last year’s record of 63,500 tickets sold during the Tigers Unlimited window—no general public inventory remained. Head coach Hugh Freeze said more than 4,000 new ticket holders joined, and fans can buy limited single-game packages starting Thursday. WAKA
- ➤ Auburn Head Baseball Coach Butch Thompson was named Southeast Region Coach of the Year by ABCA after leading the Tigers to the Super Regionals—making him only the second coach in program history to earn the honor. WAKA
