  • The Auburn Juneteenth Parade 2025 will bring community members together to honor emancipation—organizers plan a local celebration and will provide more details soon.  The Observer
  • The East Alabama Community Foundation hosted its annual grant ceremony at Opelika Public Library, awarding more than $30,000 in education and social services grants to local nonprofits—projects that support schools, healthcare, and community needs—and marked a commitment to addressing critical local challenges.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Opelika will host the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit this fall at Southern Union State Community College as it arrives with a police escort on Sept. 10 and stays until Sept. 16. EMS director James Doody said the traveling exhibit is designed to educate middle school students and that schools will provide buses + the event marks the first time the national memorial has come to Alabama.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Tuesday night meeting, the Opelika City Council approved a resolution to pause business licenses for consumable hemp products in line with Act No. 2025-385 signed by Gov. Kay Ivey on May 17. The moratorium took effect immediately and will expire on Jan. 2 unless the council extends it—this action enforces strict state testing and labeling standards.  The Observer
  • Legal public notices in Auburn and Opelika list several upcoming Extra Space Storage auctions on June 26—where personal property in storage units will be sold for cash online—and set probate hearings for estates such as Wanda Szostak and Annie Underwood in July and August, with deadlines for interested parties to respond.
