- ➤ The Auburn Scrabble Club meets every Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Newspaper Reading Room at Ralph Brown Draughon Library unless members travel for tournaments. The club hosted its 12th tournament last weekend with players from Georgia, Florida and Tennessee and founder Eric Harshbarger—one of the top-ranked state players—guides both new and experienced players in casual matches. - ➤ After months of closure due to code violations and many inspections, the Springwood Hotel in Opelika reopened 40 rooms and earned a certificate of occupancy on May 1. - ➤ Data from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education shows the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa received 2,223 high school graduates while Auburn University had 2,202—community colleges remain the top group choice statewide. - ➤ Auburn University College of Nursing repurposed spring commencement flowers by delivering 300 vases to local hospitals and senior centers (including East Alabama Medical Center, the Lafayette Senior Center, and Dadeville Healthcare) as part of its Flowers for Friends program led by Professor Ann Lambert. - ➤ At today’s meeting, the Lee County Commission approved an exemption to the solid waste disposal fee under Act 2025-228 for households with incomes at or below 75% of the federal poverty level—residents must submit an annual application to the Lee County Health Department between July 1 and Sept 30 for the exemption to begin with the next fiscal year starting Oct 1.
