- ➤ Several community events will take place in the coming days — history reenactors will gather in period attire at Pioneer Park on June 14 and Opelika will host Food Truck Friday on June 20, while The Jule’s Spring Exhibition Ending Sale runs from July 1 to 5 with an Auburn University faculty art showcase through July 5. - ➤ The Auburn Scrabble Club meets every Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Newspaper Reading Room at Ralph Brown Draughon Library and hosted its 12th tournament last weekend with players from Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. - ➤ Jan Hume stepped down as secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education after nearly 14 years to take a teaching role at Auburn University. Ami Brooks—who directs the agency’s P-3 program—will replace Hume and begin work on June 16 while Hume stays through the summer to help with the transition. AL.com
- ➤ Samantha “Sam” Vise—a senior at Auburn University who changed her major to journalism after working on the student paper—joined The Observer as a summer intern; she said she will cover local events in Opelika, will graduate on Aug. 9, and plans to work for a news outlet in Orlando after graduation. - ➤ The Lee County Commission approved Act 2025-228 — which exempts households earning below 75% of the federal poverty level from solid waste fees — and households must now submit required documents to the Health Department from July 1 to Sept. 30 for the next fiscal year starting Oct. 1.
