  • Auburn Therapy Dogs, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit, brings certified therapy dogs to hospitals, nursing homes, schools and libraries to ease stress for people in crisis. Founder Will Leveille said his team of 20 volunteer handler-dog teams is seeking more volunteers to expand free animal-assisted support across the community.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed HB 445 that limits hemp products by setting a 10mg per serving cap and strict licensing, and local hemp shop owners say many stores will struggle to stay open when the law takes effect on July 1 with full compliance required by January 1—business owners worry this law will force thousands of small shops to close.  The Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wes Collins will perform with his band at the Sundilla Concert Series on Thursday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. at AUUF in Auburn—tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door, with free refreshments provided and a discount for students.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its meeting on May 13, the Auburn City Schools board approved five bids totaling over $2.6 million for intercom upgrades, facility renovations, and a bus loop extension. The board also appointed new officers, recognized teacher and student achievements & launched the Helping Families Initiative with the DA to monitor truancy.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public legal notices in Lee County detail estate actions, property disputes, and contract completions including the drainage improvements at Duck Samford Stadium while Opelika City Council has scheduled a public hearing on June 3 for a proposal to vacate rights-of-way in Fox Run Industrial Park—affected parties must respond by set deadlines.  The Observer
  • U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville announced his run for governor in Auburn on May 27th during a live Fox News appearance—he said he will focus on manufacturing jobs, illegal immigration, education, and retaining graduates. Political analyst Steve Flowers said Tuberville's strong conservative name recognition makes him a tough challenge as he serves until his Senate seat is up for election in 2026.  WAKA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Students from LaFayette High School and Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School received required sports physicals last week at the Chambers County Community Health and Wellness Center through a joint effort by OnMed and the Auburn University Rural Health Initiative. Auburn University nursing students checked blood pressure, vision, height, and weight with help from Dr. Robert McAlindon + Aubie the Tiger made an appearance to engage the students.  The Observer
