COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Auburn residents have free events this week: the Live & Local Concert Series plays at Kiesel Park on May 21 and May 28 and Tuesdays in the Garden welcomes visitors to St Dunstan’s from 2 to 4 p.m. also the Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast honors local heroes on May 25.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, May 15, community members gathered at Opelika Public Library for the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service that honored fallen Lee County officers. The Opelika Police Department led the tribute with a joint honor guard and remarks from local leaders (including Chief Johnathan Clifton).  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl spoke on Monday at the Pearl Family Foundation Fore the Children Golf Classic about his transition to an assistant role and his reflections on missing coaching while praising his son Steven for leading Auburn to its first NIT title — defending his broadcasting style.  AL.com
  • Beauregard High School named Seneric McCurdy (a 2009 alumnus with 11 years' coaching experience) as its new head football coach; he was introduced on May 12 at the Lee County Board of Education meeting and at a press conference on May 13 at the school.  The Observer
  • Four Auburn baseball players earned All-SEC honors after a 17-13 conference season. Sophomore second baseman Chris Rembert led the team with a First Team selection while first baseman Ethin Bingaman, left-handed pitcher Jackson Sanders, and third baseman Eric Guevara received additional accolades.  AL.com
  • Auburn High baseball team swept Central in a two-game semifinal on May 15 at Cimo Field to secure a spot in the 7A state championship series. They will face Hewitt-Trussville in Oxford (Thu, May 21) and Jacksonville (Fri, May 22).  The Observer
  • Beauregard High School's Lady Hornets booked their third state tournament spot after a 4-0 win (May 14) at Montgomery's Lagoon Park Softball Complex and face Lawrence County today.  The Observer
  • Auburn football hosted four commitments during Big Cat Weekend — including 4-star tight end George Lamons Jr. who built relationships to sway recruits — and three-star linebacker Kareem Palmer committed soon after, strengthening the 2027 class.  AL.com
  • The top-ranked Glenwood baseball team advanced to the state championship after sweeping Lee-Scott Academy on May 13 at The Swamp — the Gators will now face No. 3 Gordo High School in a best-of-three series starting today at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.  The Observer
  • Auburn basketball coach Steven Pearl said his team finalized its 2026-27 roster after adding Lithuanian guard Mantas Rubštavičius and nine players, with campus moves underway and practices set for early June; the Tigers will tour Greece in August to boost camaraderie (aiming for an early competitive edge).  AL.com
