  • Gov Ivey signed a new law that lets the chief justice appoint visiting judges to handle violent crime cases more quickly—Attorney General Steve Marshall requested such an appointment to fast-track the trial of Ibraheem Yazeed, who is accused of kidnapping and killing a college student from Auburn.  Opelika-Auburn News
  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed HB8 to ban non-FDA-approved flavored vaping products from convenience stores and to stop sales in vending machines, with the rule taking effect on June 1. Convenience store owners worry the short timeline will disrupt business — they question how the state board will enforce age checks and license approvals.  AL.com
  • Opelika City Council unanimously awarded a $7.23M bid to Gamble Winter Construction LLC for phase two renovations at Floral Park — the upgrades will add a field house, new bleacher pads, an inclusive playground and parking lot to serve youth football and soccer. Recreation manager Matthew Battles said the 30 acre project will take about 10 months and be finished in time for fall sports.  Opelika-Auburn News
