- ➤ O Grows Farmers’ Market will start on Tuesday, May 19 at the Opelika Courthouse Square where local vendors will sell fresh produce & other goods until Aug. 25. The market runs weekly from 3 to 6 p.m. and includes food assistance programs for residents. The Observer
- ➤ This week in Auburn, attend Tuesdays in the Garden at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church from 2 to 4 p.m. and plan for the Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast on May 25 at the Hotel at Auburn University, plus the free SummerNight Downtown Art Walk on June 5 downtown. The Observer

- ➤ Hanwha Defense USA announced today that it is establishing an integration and test site in Opelika for its K9 Mobile Howitzers, signing a three-year lease and investing over $2 million to create about 40 jobs + strengthen ties with Auburn University. The Observer

- ➤ At its May 5 meeting, Opelika recognized graduating seniors for biliteracy in English and Spanish under ESL teacher Brenna Flowers with Mayor Eddie Smith (plus other leaders) present. The council set May 7 as Children’s Mental Health Day and honored ALS Awareness Month for a former council member. The Observer

- ➤ Lee County Commission met April 27 to review routine business and honor local talent. The meeting recognized Kentravious Dowdell for his bowling success, Libby Gore for her achievement with the All State Treble Choir, and Smiths Station Fire District personnel for their fast response during a March structure fire. - ➤ Auburn basketball coach Steven Pearl announced the team added South Alabama transfer Adam Olsen (the Sun Belt’s record 3-point shooter, who made 102 shots in 2025) to boost the roster ahead of season preparations in June and the August foreign tour. AL.com
- ➤ Auburn baseball beat the UAB Blazers 10-2 Tuesday in Birmingham; the Tigers held a 33-14 record and will face Mississippi State in Starkville before hosting a three-game series against the Bulldogs starting Thursday at 7 p.m. The Auburn Plainsman
- ➤ On May 1, Lee-Scott Academy swept Thorsby in two playoff games at John Meals Field, winning 17-0 and 5-3. Pitcher Braden Martin earned the win while Cooper Gray took the loss as the No. 8 Warriors advanced in the 3A playoffs. The Observer
- ➤ Opelika High School ended its season after losing 9-6 to the Lady Panthers of Smiths Station High School on May 2 at Auburn High School — a seven-run rally in the fifth inning sealed the win. The Observer
- ➤ Auburn High and Lee-Scott Academy girls and boys soccer teams advanced to the semifinals after strong playoff wins; LSA will compete today at John Hunt Soccer Park and Auburn High will take the field tomorrow, May 7, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Observer
- ➤ Auburn High School’s girls track team ended a 40-year drought at the Class 7A state championship on May 2 with 112.5 points — a balanced effort in hurdles, jumps and relays — while Opelika High freshman Kennedy Caldwell broke the state discus record with a 143-foot, 2-inch throw. The Observer
- ➤ Smiths Station High School’s Lady Panthers advanced to regionals after beating Auburn High School by a score of 2 to 1 in the 7A Area 4 tournament on May 4 in Montgomery. The team, led by seventh-grade pitcher Avery Culberson and a key hit by Serenity Corley, reached regionals for the first time since 2018. The Observer
- ➤ Cyclists will compete in the Opelika Okey Dokey gravel challenge on May 9 in Opelika as they ride three route options of 34, 65 and 103 miles starting from John Emerald Distilling Company in downtown Opelika. Riders will have on-course support and join post-race festivities featuring food, vendors and music. The Observer
