  • Hanwha Defense USA will build a $2 million integration and test facility for Army artillery in Opelika that will create 40 jobs in its first phase under a three-year lease to boost local production and support supply chain efforts near Auburn University and Fort Benning.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Opelika City Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday at Fox Run School and announced a major expansion that will add about 70,300 sqft to the building (expansion project).  Opelika-Auburn News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama's two-month sales tax holiday on food began Friday after legislators passed a bill to suspend the 2% tax, saving taxpayers an estimated $46 million. The law also allows workers to deduct up to $1,000 from their state income taxes & start filing next year.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Auburn guard Keyshawn Hall, who averaged 20.4 points per game last season, will join the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago from May 10-17. He was named All-SEC third team and became the first Auburn player in 32 years to score 30+ points in back-to-back games.  AL.com
  • On Friday, May 1, 2026, eight NFL teams held rookie minicamps where players with Alabama football roots – including both draft picks and undrafted prospects – began their NFL careers in organized training sessions. The camps featured several athletes with Auburn ties.  AL.com
  • Statewide high school baseball playoffs unfolded Thursday amid rain, delivering decisive wins including Auburn’s 2-0 series win (Auburn 2-10, Daphne 1-5) with several matchups pending Game 3s on Saturday. Scores covered multiple classes from Class 1 to 7A.  AL.com
