COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Auburn community is invited to the 26th annual Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast at 8 a.m. May 25 at the Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center, honoring John R. Wingfield III. A free wreath-laying ceremony starts at 10 a.m. near the Veterans Memorial Monument.  The Observer
  • Residents are invited to bring community photos during sessions on May 7, May 23, or June 4 for the America 250 Timeline project, with selected images displayed on July 2. The library received over $10,000 from the Library Foundation to fund new programs+ summer fiber arts classes.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tiger Town Embroidery & Screenprinting celebrated 25 years on April 1 in Auburn and has grown from one unit with three employees in 2001 to two units with 11, now offering custom embroidery, screenprinting and promotional print items for local schools and universities.  The Observer
  • Auburn sophomore Elizabeth Belcher turned her lifelong love for baking into a certified cottage food business after taking an Alabama Extension training class and now sells sourdough, cakes and cookies through her venture (Eats by Elizabeth).  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Auburn City Schools announced that all students will receive free breakfast beginning Friday, May 1 and continuing through the 2026-2027 school year. The program is funded by an Alabama School Breakfast Grant to boost student well-being & focus.  WAKA
  • Auburn City Schools announced four new hires for the 2026-2027 school year—Josh Harry as principal of Yarbrough, Tiffani Croley as principal of Ogletree, Dr. Duriel Barlow as executive director of Human Resources and Keith Wood as head coach for boys cross-country.  The Observer
  • Sen. Katie Britt secured $298,719 for Southern Union State Community College as part of over $5.74 million for Alabama community colleges to boost workforce training and local job opportunities in Opelika (FY26 LHHS Appropriations Act).  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Auburn University was awarded a nearly $49 million contract by the Pentagon to provide research and engineering support to the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation and Missile Center at Redstone Arsenal for the next five years (work orders will dictate location and funding details).  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Auburn native Dr. Victoria Starks (finishing her residency in anesthesiology at UCLA) was named the 2025 Great Catch Winner after quickly identifying malignant hyperthermia in the operating room and received a Hero Award along with a Resident Educator Award from medical students.  The Observer
  • Auburn High students from the HOSA program in Lee County studied teen nicotine addiction, finding social environments and early exposure drive usage (the team earned second place at state and will compete in Indianapolis) to raise awareness and reduce stigma.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. James held a pep rally yesterday to celebrate the Girls Tennis team for winning the 4A-5A state title. The event rallied students and families around the team's achievement.  WAKA
  • Auburn safety Jack Luttrell medically retired and will not appear on the football roster because he struggled with a shoulder injury during spring practice and the 2025 season (he transferred from Arizona).  AL.com
