COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Watoola Methodist Church is hosting its 50th barbecue at 1370 Lee Road 38, Opelika on Saturday, May 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with live music by the Cooper Creek Band starting at 11 a.m.+ Slow-cooked meats, Brunswick stew and baked goods will be sold to support church projects.  The Observer
  • JLD Enterprises, LLC completed all work on the Pickle Ball Courts Phase III – base, grading, drainage and site work – at 1001 Sportsplex Parkway in Opelika. Persons with claims should contact the contractor or City Engineer at 710 Fox Trail in Opelika.  The Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Tuesday a $12.2 million settlement with Roblox that will fund the Safe School Initiative for school resource officers. The deal mandates age verification & expanded parental controls to improve online safety.  WAKA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Women’s Hope Gala will be held on April 27 at the Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center at 6 p.m. to raise funds for the Women’s Medical Clinic, featuring nationally renowned pro-life speaker Rebekah Hagan, live music, and a tribute to Pastor Jeff Meyers.  The Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers broke ground on a new student housing project at 141 Wright St., downtown Auburn, on April 15 + Landmark Properties donated $10,000 to the Hudson Family Foundation, and the project is set to open ahead of the Fall 2028 semester.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wetumpka High defeated Lee-Scott Academy 6-3 on April 20 at John Meals Field (spoiling the senior night celebration) as the loss dropped the Warriors to 19-11 (with both teams preparing for Friday's playoffs).  The Observer
  • Steven Pearl has signed former Sun Belt players Thomas Dowd & Adam Olsen to join the team at Neville Arena next season. Dowd helped Troy win back to back tournament titles and was named tournament MOP, while Olsen set a three point record at South Alabama.  WAKA
  • Glenwood seniors shone on Senior Night as they swept Beulah High with scores of 10-0 and 13-2 on April 16 and 17, with key plays from standout players. The team will host its first-round 3A playoff game against Montgomery Academy on April 24 at Tim Fanning Field.  The Observer
  • The Auburn High School baseball team swept Opelika in three games from April 15 to April 17. The Tigers improved their record to 23 wins + 10 losses fueled by key plays from Bryson Sheppard, building momentum for the rest of the season.  The Observer
