COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local law enforcement will support Lee County Special Olympics during the Cops on Top fundraiser on Friday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kroger on Dean Road in Auburn and the Tiger Town Kroger in Opelika — officers will greet customers and take rooftop posts while a $5 lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Observer
  • Leadership Lee County will host the Ignite Leadership Conference on May 6 at Southern Union State Community College Business and Technology Center in Opelika. The event brings business owners & community leaders together for a day of learning and networking.  The Observer
  • Auburn CityFest will be held at Kiesel Park on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free with family-friendly live music, arts and crafts vendors, interactive children’s activities, food trucks, and a headlining act by Circus Incredible (sponsored by Four Seasons Credit Union). The event will also offer a free giveaway for the first 1,000 visitors.  The Observer
  • St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church at 136 E. Magnolia Ave in Auburn will celebrate its centennial with a community garden party from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 — the event will feature a church tour and is part of a campaign to raise $100,000 for an endowment to preserve the historic building.  The Observer

  • Kelli Shomaker, Auburn University CFO with 29 years of work in higher education and money management, was named to SmartBank's board effective immediately — she worked at Texas A&M, U.S. Global Investors and PricewaterhouseCoopers. SmartBank will use her skills to help lead the bank in new growth — her experience is expected to boost future plans.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Auburn University’s Board of Trustees approved a complete renovation of Cambridge Hall, a 72500 square feet dormitory closed in August 2023 due to water damage, with plans to remove outdated systems and upgrade ADA features to reopen with 300 beds in fall 2027 — additional campus projects for dining and historic building updates were also approved.  Opelika-Auburn News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Opelika Neighborhood Mobile Wellness Clinic received a $10,000 grant as part of a nine-month learning collaborative with four other hospitals to improve mobile health services. The grant will help the clinic offer screenings, blood pressure checks and referrals to underserved areas in Opelika — boosting community care.  The Observer
