CRIME NEWS

  • Auburn man Taharra Jaquay Brunson was convicted of murdering and kidnapping 18-year-old Thomas Green, whose body was found in the woods near Waverly in September 2020—his sentencing is set for May 27 while co-defendants face capital murder-kidnapping charges.  Opelika-Auburn News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 9, the United Campus Workers of Alabama at Auburn University held a rally at Toomer's Corner and signed a petition demanding a cost of living adjustment, a $17.50 minimum wage, the elimination of graduate fees, and a $25k stipend for grad students—aiming to secure fair pay and better work conditions. They marched to Samford Hall to deliver the petition to President Christopher Roberts and CFO Kelli Shomaker—who were not in office at the time.  The Auburn Plainsman

  • Alabama lawmakers advanced bills that would require public schools to display the Ten Commandments with key historical documents in common areas and classrooms. The legislation prohibits using tax money for the displays and experts have raised legal concerns that it could spark court challenges.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study published in JAMA Network Open found that Alabama had the highest maternal death rate—59.7 deaths per 100,000 live births—during the five-year period from 2018 to 2022, and nearly one third of maternal deaths in the U.S. happened more than six weeks after childbirth. The research showed that over 80% of these pregnancy-related deaths were preventable and underscored the need for better care from conception until one year after birth.  AL.com
