CULTURE NEWS

  • The Opelika Songwriters Festival returns this weekend with more than 80 shows at downtown venues. Auburn native Paul McDonald, who competed on American Idol, will headline on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. while singer Nikki Lane follows at 3:30 p.m.  Opelika-Auburn News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Auburn City Council approved a $500K contribution to the Lee County roundabout project near Society Hill and Moores Mill Road at today’s meeting — a move aimed at easing local traffic congestion.  Opelika-Auburn News

SPORTS NEWS

  • After Auburn reached the Sweet 16, coach Bruce Pearl held a press conference Saturday to call for the release of American hostage Eden Alexander from Gaza — he said God urged him to speak up and reminded his players of their roots while urging leaders to act quickly so the hostage might be freed.  AL.com
  • Auburn Softball struggled against No. 2 Texas this past weekend as the Tigers were swept in three games. The team will face in-state rival Troy on March 26th at 6 p.m. CT—aiming to regroup after the tough series.  Eagle Eye TV
  • In 1993 Auburn Football finished the season with an undefeated 11—0 record despite a scandal when former player Eric Ramsey released 22 tapes alleging that boosters and coaches paid him and enforced segregation in team housing. The NCAA investigation imposed sanctions including a TV ban, reduced scholarships, and a postseason ban that contributed to coach Pat Dye’s resignation and shaped the team’s legacy as recalled by former tight end Andy Fuller.  The Auburn Plainsman
