COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 2, locals gathered at Auburn University Golf Club for the ABLE Invitational Golf Tournament to support the upcoming film ABLE, which begins production in Auburn-Opelika in 2026. Over 50 local businesses and civic groups backed the fundraiser, expected to boost jobs and creative opportunities.  The Observer
  • Local events this week include the free East Alabama Community Band concert at Auburn Performing Arts Center on March 16, featuring classical tunes and Beatles-inspired pieces, plus on March 28 Auburn Parks hosts Bark in the Park & Tails and Trails 3K at Kiesel Park for families and pups.  The Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • New owners Mallorie Ray and Ashton Smith took over Precious Cargo and Five Little Piggies in downtown Opelika on Feb. 7 and have revamped the store by adding shoes; they will host silhouette portrait and Easter photo events (dates pending) to support local community growth.  The Observer
  • Miele Manufacturing marked a milestone by assembling its 10,000th oven and range at its Opelika plant this week, reached just over a year after launching production. The achievement has boosted local job growth and community confidence (nearly 50 new jobs were created) as the facility plans further expansion.  The Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Shinhwa Auto USA Corporation announced it will invest an additional $37 million to expand its Auburn manufacturing operation with a new tooling facility at Auburn Technology Park West, adding about 20 skilled jobs (technical and engineering roles).  The Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • National Nutrition Month in March encourages Auburn residents to embrace healthier eating + Alabama Extension experts suggest simple changes, such as swapping sugary drinks for water, to boost focus, mood and performance.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Auburn Tigers defeated UAB 17 to 2 in a seven-inning game on Tuesday night, moving their record to 14 to 2 as they head into SEC play. They will face Missouri Friday at 6 p.m. in Columbia.  The Auburn Plainsman
  • The Auburn Tigers have built a strong case for an NCAA tournament bid after posting seven wins against bubble teams during conference play, but they must secure additional wins to solidify their spot — upcoming games will be critical for their future invitation.  AL.com
  • On March 4, Beauregard High School defeated Smiths Station High School 12 to 3 in a home softball game, led by Shelby Craft’s three run triple and Lindsey Moulton’s two run home run (the Lady Hornets improved to 6 to 4 on the season).  The Observer
  • The Mighty Oaks beat the Lions 18-3 at West Ridge Park in Opelika, scoring 11 runs in one inning and seven in another before spring break. They will host Lafayette Christian on March 17 at 5:30 p.m. to continue building season momentum.  The Observer
  • No. 19 Auburn won two home matches this weekend, including a 4+0 win over Alabama that lifted the team to a 13-2 record; the Tigers played strong doubles and singles and will face Vanderbilt and Kentucky next in conference play.  The Auburn Plainsman
  • Auburn High School girls basketball lost 65-63 in the 7A state semifinals against Bob Jones on March 5 after building a 15-point lead (the team struggled with free throws and Coach Courtney Pritchett lauded standout Braylee Winfrey, who scored 30 points in her final game).  The Observer
  • The Special Olympics Alabama State Basketball Tournament featured over 22 teams and nearly 300 athletes in games on March 5 at the Wire Road Soccer Complex and competitions on March 6 at several Auburn venues — Mayor Ron Anders welcomed athletes at the Frank Brown Recreation Center opening ceremonies.  The Observer
