COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Auburn Heritage Association unveiled a new historical marker at the Lee County Courthouse on March 1 that highlights the courthouse’s long past and lists probate judges from David Read to Jere Colley. Association president Mary Norman said the addition + honors decades of local history.  The Observer
  • The local NAACP hosted a town hall with Lee County law enforcement, including Sheriff Jay Jones, Opelika Chief Johnathan Clifton and District Attorney Jessica Ventiere, at Christ Temple Holiness Church in Opelika on Monday, Mar. 2; the panel stressed C.P.R. & community trust for better public safety.  The Observer

  • Wild Wing Cafe in Opelika will re-open under new management this month + its new team plans to bring fresh comfort foods, live entertainment and a family-friendly atmosphere as owner-finance manager Jeroskie Finch and operations lead Karanja Story have retained former employees and secured local media support.  The Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Auburn Plainsman started in 1893 when two literary societies ended their rivalry to launch a student newspaper, publishing its first issue on Nov. 17 after covering a football loss. It moved online in 2021 & now gives Auburn a voice & documents campus stories.  The Auburn Plainsman

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local physician proposed a pediatric and wellness clinic in Opelika’s former Chamber building (601 Ave. A) during the recent City Council session. The new health center will offer traditional pediatric care, specialty health services, and student training, addressing a longstanding need in downtown Opelika.  The Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Auburn ranked high in homeownership growth as its rate rose from 43.75% in 2014 to 53.07% in 2024 despite a large student population. The city's population increased from 53,380 to 80,594 and median home value reached $364,800 (Realty Homes analysis).  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 26, Beauregard High School girls and boys soccer teams beat Beulah High School on the road by winning 10-0 and 12-0, respectively. Coach Kelly Tubbs praised the teams for their unity, grit, and hard work during the matches.  The Observer
  • Today, Auburn women's basketball faces Texas A&M at 5 p.m. CST at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C. A win in the tournament will advance the Tigers to round two + boost their postseason hopes.  The Auburn Plainsman
  • Auburn High School won its 6-2 home opener over Headland High School on Feb. 27 when Stuart Mills scored in the fifth and sixth innings—helping the Tigers improve to a 6-1 record after a close loss to Venice High School.  The Observer
  • The Texas A&M Aggies will face Auburn to open the SEC tournament, and a win may set up a matchup with Ole Miss if they advance.  AL.com
