  • Water Cycle 2026 is a gravel bike race at Pioneer Park at Lee County Historical Society on March 28 at 8 a.m. that supports Auburn University’s Engineers Without Borders projects in Bolivia, Guatemala, and Tennessee through registrations that include ride options (60, 30 and 15 miles) and a post-ride festival.  The Observer

  • KettenWulf, a German-based family company, announced it will build a $34 million operation in Auburn that will create 70 jobs — Gov. Ivey highlighted the region's skilled workforce and strong manufacturing heritage.  WAKA
  • KLM Tasty Donuts opened on Jan. 15 in Opelika to serve Auburn-Opelika residents; owner Gigi Chhim expanded her original shop to offer breakfast donuts, apple fritters, sandwiches, and specialty drinks in a colorful, family-friendly setting.  The Observer

  • This week, Nigel Wearne performs blues at The Sound Wall in Opelika on Jan. 30, a dinner for families supporting disability is set for Feb. 6 at Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, and the Auburn Forum for Southern Art and Culture (titled 'Sew Their Names') runs on Feb. 7.  The Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of middle schoolers showcased their engineering skills at HMMA's robotics competition on Jan. 26, 2026, where 285 students from local school systems competed in head-to-head robot contests (a two-day event organized in partnership with Auburn University’s Southeastern Center of Robotics Education).  WAKA
  • Southern Union Community College named its new campus building the Gary Fuller Business and Technology Center. At the ceremony, Opelika Mayor Eddie Smith read a statement and former Mayor Gary Fuller (the building's namesake) highlighted his contributions.  Opelika-Auburn News
  • Southern Union State Community College held a ceremony on Jan. 26 to name its Business & Technology Center after Gary Fuller, an Opelika leader noted for sparking industrial growth and advancing local education. Local officials praised Fuller’s legacy during the dedication.  The Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local medical experts advise getting the annual flu vaccine and staying home if sick to lower flu spread, noting symptoms include fever, cough, and body aches. Parents are urged to keep children with flu symptoms at home until they are fever-free for 24 hours.  The Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Monday, Jan. 26, the Glenwood Gators split their contests with Lee-Scott Academy — the boys lost by two points after a comeback while the girls won 60-59 on a last-second stand at home.  The Observer
  • On Jan. 23, Auburn High School girls secured a 42-41 win against the Lady Red Devils and Central High School boys rallied for a 64-61 victory in Phenix City, clinching first-place finishes and the right to host their area tournaments.  The Observer
  • The Auburn Tigers return to Neville Arena on a three-game win streak as they host Texas today at 6 p.m. CST. Junior forward Keyshawn Hall led their win over Florida, and Texas makes its first trip since Feb. 11, 1911 — marking a historic moment.  The Auburn Plainsman
  • Trinity Eagles evened the series by winning 52-44 over the Mighty Oaks (in Opeika) as senior Nate Riddle scored 20 points and guard Reid House added 18. The win improved the record to 11-6 in AISA A Region 1 Area 2 as they aim for a top tournament seed.  The Observer
